Glenbrook N. 48, Maine West 0

This has been a tough first season for Maine West football coach Chris Hare.

But things had been looking up recently, even though the Warriors (0-5) had yet to win.

Unfortunately, the Warriors' progress was halted in a big way at Glenbrook North on Thursday night.

When Chris Collins took the ball down to the 1 yard line on a 40-yard run, then snuck it in for a touchdown, the Spartans (4-1) had a 41-0 lead after Evan Christiansen's point after.

That meant that the teams played with a running clock for the final 18:11 in the Spartans' 48-0 victory.

When asked if his team has improved, Hare said, "The last couple of games, I'd say yes. Today, no. Today we took a step back. We couldn't match them physically or their speed."

When it came to speed, no one could keep up with Collins. The 5-foot-9, 175-pound senior, who seemed to have a second gear and broke several tackles mostly on draw plays, finished with 193 yards on 18 carries, including runs of 60, 40 and 20 yards.

"He's impressive as a running back," Hare said. "He's got it all. We knew about him."

Not only did the Warriors lose the game, they also lost quarterback Sean Willett with a concussion as the first half ended.

When the second half began, wide receiver Frank Hess was playing quarterback, which had ramifications for West's game plan.

"That threw us off our game because you have your No. 1 quarterback out and your No. 1 receiver in a new position."

West had trouble sustaining drives. In the first quarter the Warriors punted the ball away, but Glenbrook fumbled it back to West. Four plays later, West lost the ball on an interception.

The Warriors' next four possessions each ended in four plays, and on their fifth, Eric Brunner intercepted Willett on the first play of the drive.
