Like haunted houses? The Jaycees need your help

The Palatine Jaycees want to scare up some volunteers for their haunted house, which will move to a new location here in town this year.

The Jaycees are seeking volunteers to help design, construct and decorate the haunted house, which will be located in the Sears Essentials lot at Northwest Highway and Hicks Road in Palatine. In addition, individuals are needed to act as ghosts, goblins and creatures for the haunting of the house once it is open to the public.

"This is the first time in the last 15 years that we have been able to find a location for our haunted house in Palatine," said Brad Haun, co-chairman of the Jaycees Haunted House Committee.

"Last year we had a location in Buffalo Grove, but this year we are back in Palatine. After a 15-year lapse, we have quite a bit of work to do to create a brand new house," Haun added. "We are looking for any past Palatine Jaycees or community members who would like to help with the house. All of the proceeds from the haunted house will be used to benefit our community."

Volunteers must either be 18 years of age or their parents must contact the Jaycees for them to sign up. Interested individuals should call (847) 604-0288 for more information or to sign up.

"Haunted houses are a long-standing tradition with the Jaycees," said Jason Foltyn, Haunted House co-chairman. "Longtime Palatine residents will remember some of the past houses we have had at the old firehouse on Slade Street, the park district pool locker room and several old houses."

The house will open Oct. 12. It also will operate on Oct. 13, 14, 19-21, and 26-30. The last day of operation will be on Halloween, Oct. 31.

On Fridays, the house will run from 6 to 11 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays, the Jaycees will provide a "light fright" for younger children from 3 to 4 p.m. A "full fright" will be offered from 4 to 11 p.m. on Saturdays and from 4 to 9 p.m. on Sundays. On Oct. 29 and 30, it will be open from 6 to 9 p.m. and on Oct. 31 from 6 to 10 p.m.

The cost for adults is $10, and $5 for children under 11 years old. Children under 3 years old are free.

New exercise system: Midtown Athletic Club -- Palatine, 1760 N. Hicks Road, invites the public to try its new kinesis classes through Sept. 30 free of charge.

Kinesis is a unique exercise system that focuses on movement through balance, flexibility and strength. Participants use a kinesis wall that is constructed of four panels bearing cables, grips and weight stacks. The exerciser keeps resistance throughout the workout with tri-dimensional movements.

Midtown is the only club in the Northwest suburbs and one of only three clubs in the Chicago area to offer kinesis.

More than 60 30-minute sessions will be offered each week during morning, afternoon and evening hours on weekdays and morning and early afternoon hours on the weekends.

For more information or to register for these complimentary sessions, call Jenny Eaker at (847) 991-4646. For more information on the club, visit www.midtownclubs.com.
