Briefs: Triad offers seniors free safety checks

On Saturday, the Elgin Township Triad will present its annual free vehicle safety check for seniors living in the Elgin area who are 60 years of age and older between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Elgin Township building parking lot, 729 S. McLean Blvd.

Elgin Community College automotive technology instructors and their students will conduct a 25-point safety check on the vehicles for free.

The check list includes fluids, taillights, belts, hoses and tire pressure. No repairs or oil changes will be conducted and the safety check will take about 20 minutes.

Cemetery walk celebrates 20 years

The Elgin Area Historical Society's 20th annual Historic Elgin Cemetery Walk will take place at noon Sunday at Bluff City Cemetery, 945 Bluff City Blvd. The last walk will depart at 3:30 p.m.

As visitors arrive at the cemetery to await their tour, they will be greeted by Elmer Gylleck, well-known architect, magician and local photographer.

Costumed guides will escort groups to meet six former residents and offer descriptive information about some of the cemetery's monuments.

At the end, local historian Marge Edwards will share her insights about common mourning traditions and their origins.

Admission is $6 or $3 for children younger than 14. Historical society members receive a discounted fee of $5. For details, call (847) 742-4248.

VFW to honor POWs and MIAs

As part of nationwide observances of POW/MIA Recognition Day, the Carpentersville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5915 will hold its 20th annual ceremony in honor and remembrance of our nation's former prisoners of war and missing in action Americans. The ceremony is at 6:30 p.m. today at the Veterans Garden in Carpenter Park, off Lord Avenue and Maple Street, Carpentersville.

Girl Scouts to host a fall festival today

The third annual Girl Scout Fall Festival will be from 3 to 7 p.m. today next to St. Monica Catholic Church, 90 N. Kennedy Drive, Carpentersville.

In partnership with Centro de Informacion, Sybaquay Council's Latina Adult Volunteer Advancement program is hosting this family event for free. There will be games, face painting, music, dancing and karaoke.
