Briefs: District 102 receives certificate
Aptakisic-Tripp Community Consolidated Schools District 102 in Buffalo Grove won the Association of School Business Officials International's Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting Program for excellence in the preparation and issuance of the fiscal year-end 2006 financial statements.
The Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting Program was designed by ASBO International to enable school business officials to achieve a high standard of financial reporting.
Young musicians sought to compete
The North Suburban Symphony invites young musicians to apply for the 2007 James Glacking Young Musicians Competition. Open to vocalists and instrumentalists, except pianists, in ninth through 12th grade.
Interested students must reside in either Lake or northern Cook counties. Submit an application, along with a CD or DVD of two contrasting selections and an entry fee to Melinda Vajdic, 1131 Osterman Ave., Deerfield, IL 60015. Forms are available from the music departments of most area high schools or at northsubsymphony.org.
Entries must be postmarked by Oct. 1. Finalists will perform in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 13. Cash prizes will be presented, and the first-place winner will have the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the North Suburban Symphony. Call Melinda Vajdic, (847) 374-0339.
Beth Judea class to study Jewish law
A weekly class studying Jewish Law will meet from 8 to 9 a.m. Sundays from October through May at Congregation Beth Judea, at Route 83 and Hilltop Road in Long Grove. It is advised that participants purchase a copy of Volume 1 of the Mishnah Torah by Rabbi Moses Maimonides in Hebrew/English. The edition that is recommended and will be used in class is by Moznaim Publishing Corp., translated by Rabbi Eliyahu Touger. Call (847) 634-0777.
Knights to start annual campaign
Glenkirk will partner with 10 Knights of Columbus councils and hit the streets, corners, sidewalks and stores to collect donations for their annual Tootsie Roll fundraiser. More volunteers are needed to collect during a two-hour time slot between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. today and Saturday at various North Shore locations to give out "thank-you" Tootsie Rolls. Proceeds help fund Glenkirk's programs and services, which provide support for individuals with developmental disabilities and enable them to participate more fully in all aspects of community life. Couples invited to learn swing steps
The Shoreline Dance Club invites couples to learn basic swing steps in a relaxed atmosphere at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Gorton Community Center, 400 E. Illinois Road in Lake Forest. The lesson, given by professional instructors, Bob and Penny Urbon, will be followed by an evening of social dancing. Admission per couple is $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers. Membership per couple is $20 per year. Dress is casual, and refreshments will be provided. Adults of all ages and dancing abilities are welcome.
