Travolta still has the moves 30 years later

Thirty years ago, a film about a troubled young man from Brooklyn became a hit around the world. John Travolta starred as Tony Manero, whose ordinary life became magic on Saturday night, when he would shine on the dance floor as the best dancer at the local disco.

"Saturday Night Fever" became much more than a motion picture, thanks to a great soundtrack by the Bee Gees, which became the foundation for the disco era. The dancing in the film is terrific, and it's a realistic look at life in the late 1970s.

Travolta received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, and the film grossed more than $200 million.

"Saturday Night Fever: Collector's Edition" (Paramount, 118 minutes, Rated R-sexual situations, language; $19.99)

A beautiful new package features new commentary by director John Badham, a five-part look at the film with new interviews and featurettes, a "learn how to dance like Travolta" segment, Fever Challenge, '70s Discopedia and more.

Roger Corman made low-budget exploitation films that led to him being known as "King of the B-Movies." Corman shot his films quickly, and they usually made money as popular features at local drive-ins. Many famous directors got their start with Roger Corman, including Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Ron Howard, James Cameron and Jonathan Demme.

"Roger Corman Collection" (MGM, $39.98)

The eight films in the collection are "Premature Burial" with Ray Milland, "The Man With X-Ray Eyes" with Milland, "The Wild Angels" with Peter Fonda and Bruce Dern, "The Trip" with Dennis Hopper and Fonda, "Bloody Mama" with Shelley Winters, Dern and Robert De Niro, "A Bucket of Blood" with Dick Miller, "Gas-s-s-s" with Bud Cort, Talia Shire, Ben Vereen and Cindy Williams and "The Young Racers" with Mark Damon.

"The UP Series Box Set" (First Run, six discs, $99.95)

The original concept for the series was to gather 14 children from all over England and speak to them about their dreams and what they wanted out of life. Then every seven years, director Michael Apted would find each one and speak to her or him about the same subjects discussed seven years earlier. It is a fascinating look at human nature, and will keep you riveted to your television. The complete series includes: "Seven Up," "7 Plus Seven," "21 UP," "28 UP," "35 UP, "42 UP" and "49 UP."
