Jail officer known for calm demeanor

A 19-year veteran of the Kane County sheriff's department known for his friendly demeanor and technological skills has died.

Michael Withey, 45, who supervised inmates at the jail, died Tuesday in his Sugar Grove home.

The cause of death is believed to be a heart attack, according to sheriff's department Cmdr. Patrick Keaty. Officer Withey was on leave and under a doctor's care when he died.

"He was a dedicated officer. He always contributed in any way he could," Keaty said. "He was knowledgeable about the job and a good role model. He was calm. This job can be stressful."

Withey joined the department in June 1988 and had worked in booking and the judicial center lock-up, as well as the jail. He had a knack for troubleshooting problems with computers as well as control room panels and cameras, work outside his normal duties.

"He was my best friend," said Officer Mark Nelson, who worked with Withey at the jail. "I was the best man at his wedding. He was the first friend I made when we moved to Kaneville. We were 12."

Officers Withey and Nelson enjoyed fishing and camping together. Withey loved to bowl and golf, but his passion was billiards. He was also an avid Bears fan and a season ticket holder.

"He was a real competitor," Nelson said. "He didn't hold back. Even though he was a big man, it was amazing to see him run the bases when he played softball."

"He was friendly with everyone," said Officer Don Lang, who worked with Withey for 13 years. "It was fun working with him. He loved classic rock and we'd go to concerts together.

"If he saw an article about you or a family member in the newspaper, he'd have it laminated and give it to you. He was always looking out for his friends. He will be greatly missed," Lang said.

Withey excelled at sports and academics at Kaneland High School. He attended the University of Arizona where he met Diedre "Dee" Barreto. They were married in July 1986 and moved to Sugar Grove in 1991.

He was the father of Michael Jr., 13, and Morgan, 10. He is also survived by his parents, Alvah and Susan Withey of Kaneville; his grandmother Lorraine Welles of Kaneville; four siblings; and other relatives.

Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Kaneville United Methodist Church. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m.
