Child on bike hit by SUV
Two boys riding a bike apparently were hit Wednesday evening by an SUV, and one was seriously injured.
The accident occurred in Hanover Park around 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Hanover Street and Tanglewood Avenue.
The Hanover Park Fire Department confirmed that an accident involving two children on a bike occurred but wouldn't provide any details. Police declined to comment.
Rob Waszak, who lives at the corner, said he was watching TV when he heard the crash and dialed 911.
He said the boy riding on the pegs of the bike ran off and returned with adults. The other boy, who was pedaling the bike, lay bleeding on the ground. Both appeared to be between 10 and 12 years old, he said.
"He was bleeding pretty badly," Waszak said. "I ran home and got a towel and wrapped it around his head. Blood was pouring out of his mouth, so I turned him on his side so he wouldn't choke. He lost a lot of blood."
Waszak said that by the time paramedics arrived about four minutes after the accident, the injured boy was talking and tried to sit up.
The two women in the SUV remained at the scene, he said.
Waszak said Tanglewood Avenue is a popular short cut for drivers looking to avoid the major intersection of Barrington and Irving Park roads.
"People will fly down the street doing 40 and the speed limit it 20," Waszak said. "I'm tired of it."
Waszak said he's spoken with police in the past about the speeding. Dozens of kids walk through the area every night, he said, to go to the nearby Walgreens and other stores.
He plans on addressing the Hanover Park village board tonight at its meeting about installing speed bumps or closing the street off to Barrington Road.
