Round-up: Mundelein edges LZ on fifth score
The Lake Zurich and Mundelein boys golf teams were hitting a lot of fairways and sinking a lot of putts at Steeple Chase Golf Club on Tuesday.
Both teams carded a 152 in the North Suburban Lake Division match, with host Mundelein winning on a fifth-score tiebreaker.
Lake Zurich's Ben Glatz was medalist with a 35.
Mundelein counted the nine-hole scores of Andrew Adamsick (37), Justin Wirt (38), Jack Walliser (38) and Phil Senour (39). Ben Schroeder's 39 was the difference for the Mustangs.
Lake Zurich also received 39s from Mark DeCanio, Tommy Paulson and Logan Kearney.
Warren d. Zion-Benton: At Bittersweet, Will Jones shot a 39 to lead the Blue Devils (161) to an easy win over the Zee-Bees (182) in North Suburban Lake Division action.
Grant d. Waukegan: At Orchard Hills Golf Club, Grant shot 177 to win by 16 strokes and was led by Kurt Ray's 43, which earned him medalist honors.
Girls golf
Stevenson d. Libertyville: At Crane's Landing, host Stevenson (178) won the North Suburban Lake Division showdown by one stroke.
Libertyville's Alex Hein was medalist with a 39.
Stevenson was led by Alex Kessler (43), Kaitlin Garske (44), Angelina Kim (45) and Whitney Paul (46).
Lake Zurich d. Antioch: At Spring Valley Country Club in Salem, Wis., the visiting Bears (208) were paced by Alexa Haider's 48.
Antioch entered only three golfers.
Boys soccer
Lake Zurich 1, Zion-B. 0: Tim Kreutz's second-half goal, assisted by Zak Khoshbin, lifted the Bears in North Suburban Lake Division action.
Mike Messmer made 5 saves in earning the shutout for Lake Zurich (8-3-2, 2-0).
Lakes 5, North Chicago 1: Steve Korosis scored twice for the Eagles (3-6) in their North Suburban Prairie Division opener.
John DeGrad, Josh Beckman and Edwin Martinez also scored. Andrew Stein had 3 assists.
Grayslake N. 2, Johnsburg 1: Marc Nethercote assisted on first-half goals by Jeremy Leanna and Julio Zamora, and keeper Josh Larson made 16 saves, as the Knights (9-3) won the Fox Valley Fox Division match.
"We came out much more aggressively today and it really showed by how much we controlled the tempo of the game," Grayslake North coach Adam DeCaluwe said. "Winning the loose balls really allowed us to find our feet off the ball and then attack as a team."
Girls tennis
Lake Zurich 4, Libertyville 1: The Bears swept doubles with Megan Johnson/Molly Cournoyer (No. 1), Bailey Wagner/Jen Hacker (No. 2) and Val Wilson/Gina Maliekal (No. 3).
Libertyville's Dena Boulieris won first singles. Lake Zurich's Margaret Boden was a winner at No. 2.
Lake Zurich improved to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the North Suburban Lake Division.
Girls volleyball
Grayslake North d. Huntley: Megan Falk posted team bests of 8 kills and 18 digs, as the Knights won 25-17, 25-19 for their first Fox Valley Conference Fox Division win ever.
Falk was 15 of 15 hitting and also served 2 aces.
"Megan works hard all the time and is very smart and consistent," Grayslake North coach Nikki Kirchway said. "She is always talking throughout the match and motivating the team to push (itself) to higher limits."
Grayslake North (8-8, 1-0) also got contributions from Elizabeth Phillips (3 kills, 3 aces); Alex Lowry (6 kills, 4 blocks); Kaitlyn Klausner (11 assists, 5 kills); Kauri Voss (2 kills, 2 blocks); Grace Schlagetter (17 digs); and Taylor York (4 kills, 2 aces).
"We have been working hard all season to make our offense and defense work hand in hand," Kirchway said. "Tonight we were able to accomplish this goal. Everything came together."
Marist d. Carmel: The Corsairs lost 25-22, 25-19 to fall to 8-5 overall and 1-2 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference.
Kaitlyn Howard had 10 kills and 4 blocks for Carmel, which also got 7 kills from Vanessa Toby, 16 assists from Ashley August and 12 digs from Kelsey Fredrick.
