St. Charles hires new fire chief

St. Charles aldermen voted unanimously Monday to hire a veteran Naperville firefighter as the city's next fire chief.

Patrick Mullen, who is currently assistant chief in Naperville, is scheduled to be sworn into the position Oct. 1.

"Let me be the first to welcome you," Mayor Don DeWitte told Mullen at Monday's city council meeting. "We look forward to many years of continued fine service."

Mullen, 50, replaces St. Charles' former fire chief, Alan Schullo, who retired in July. His annual salary is $128,000.

DeWitte recommended Mullen's hiring this month after a regional search, which netted 50 applicants.

Mullen did not speak publicly at the city council meeting Monday, but has said he is excited about "building new relationships" in St. Charles.

A native of the Chicago area, Mullen has more than 30 years of firefighting experience and a degree in public administration.

He will be considered annually for re-appointment to the chief's position.
