ECC offers pharmacy technician info session, classes
Are you interested in learning about what it takes to become a pharmacy technician? Elgin Community College will hold an informational session in September and a certification course starting in October for those interested in pursuing a career as a pharmacy technician.
The informational session and course will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in room 123 in the Instruction Center on ECC's main campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.
Attend ECC's Explore pharmacy technician session and learn about this entry-level position in health care. A registered pharmacist will discuss educational requirements, career opportunities and levels of certification or licensing needed. Pharmacy technicians work in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies and other health-care facilities.
Information will also be available on the certification course offered at ECC each semester.

The comprehensive 50-hour pharmacy technician course prepares students for entry-level positions in the pharmacy field and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board exam. Technicians work under the supervision of a registered pharmacist in a variety of health-care settings.
Course content includes medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, reading and interpreting prescriptions, and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Students will learn dosage calculations, IV flow rates, drug compounding, dose conversions, dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control, and billing and reimbursement. The course also includes job placement information. All books are included.
The class meets from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Oct. 5 through Nov. 30 (2007fa CVS 430 (32503) credit term registration). The cost is $999.
