Donations mean calendar is back on

A calendar filled with student artwork will show up in local mailboxes before the start of next year after all.

Earlier this summer, it was uncertain whether the traditional Palatine-Inverness Youth Art Calendar would be produced since some major funding sources pulled out.

But this month, the arts council started taking applications from local students because all the funding is now in place after some community donors stepped up.

"People really expect this calendar," said the arts council's Barbara Kerlin. "They more or less think it's a given. Anyone you talk to looks forward to it."

The last piece of funding needed came together when two private citizens donated $1,000 and $2,000, respectively, toward production costs because they felt the community should continue the tradition.

"How wonderful to have such kind, generous individuals dedicated to the youth of our community," said Kerlin.

The village of Palatine will contribute around $14,000 for postage and printing costs.

Entries will be accepted through Oct. 19 at 5 p.m. at Palatine village hall, 200 E. Wood St. A jury will select 12 winners and one grand prize winner, as well as 36 finalists. The 13 winners will be published as illustrations in the 2008 calendar.

The finalists will be awarded certificates and the 12 winners will each receive a $50 savings bond. A grand prize winner will get a $100 savings bond.

An awards reception will be held Oct. 30 at Winston Campus School in Palatine.

Applications are expected to be passed out in local schools next week. Go to palatineinvernessarts.org for an application.
