Phillies send Mets message they're still in hunt
So much for a Phillies flop. It's the New York Mets who are guarding against a September swoon.
Greg Dobbs had a pinch-hit grand slam and Philadelphia beat the sloppy Mets for the eighth straight time Sunday, completing another sweep of New York with a 10-6 victory at Shea Stadium.
The Phillies pulled within 3½ games of the NL East leaders.
"I don't know if we have their number, but we play well against them and I think the main reason is because they're in first place," Dobbs said. "They're ahead of us. We get up and excited to play them and it's a bit of a rivalry."
Diamondbacks 6, Dodgers 1:ŒEdgar Gonzalez won his seventh straight decision, Chris Snyder hit a 3-run homer and Arizona salvaged the series finale at Los Angeles.
The NL West-leading Diamondbacks remained 2 games ahead of second-place San Diego and extended their lead to 4½ games over Los Angeles.
Rockies 13, Marlins 0:ΠTodd Helton hit his 300th home run, Chris Iannetta also had a 3-run shot and Colorado avoided being swept at home for the first time this year with a win over Florida.
Colorado's 20-hit outburst, helping end a three-game skid and stay 4½ games behind San Diego in the NL wild-card race.
Padres 5, Giants 1: Jake Peavy (18-6) lowered his major league-leading ERA to 2.39, struck out 10 to take over the big league lead and pitched host San Diego over San Francisco.
Kevin Kouzmanoff had 3 hits and an RBI for the Padres, who maintained their 1½-game lead in the NL wild-card race with a sweep of San Francisco.
American League
Tigers 6, Twins 4:ŒJair Jurrjens took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning in just his fifth major-league start, helping visiting Detroit beat Minnesota and gain ground in the AL Central.
The Tigers won their seventh straight against the Twins and pulled within 4½ games of first-place Cleveland.
Yankees 4, Red Sox 3: Mariano Rivera retired David Ortiz on a popup with the bases loaded for the final out, and Derek Jeter broke an eighth-inning tie with a 3-run homer that moved visiting New York move within 4½ games of first-place Boston in the AL East.
Curt Schilling (8-8) outlasted Roger Clemens but couldn't beat Jeter, who drove a 2-2 splitter over the Green Monster to give the Yankees a 4-1 lead.
Royals 4, Indians 3:ŒBilly Buckner earned his first major-league win for Kansas City, slowing host Cleveland's drive toward an AL Central title.
Buckner (1-1) gave up 5 hits in 6 innings, striking out three and walking one.
