Fremont Public Library notes
All programs are free and are held in the second-floor meeting room. Registration is required for some programs.
Chicago Women: Suzanne Hales will portray some of Chicago's leading women in the program titled "A Celebration of Chicago Women" at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Featured will be Jane Addams, founder of the world famous social settlement Hull House on Chicago's Near West Side in 1889; Minna Everleigh, who, with her sister, ran a notorious Chicago brothel; Edith Rockefeller McCormich, an American socialite and opera patron; and Bertha Palmer, a businesswoman, socialite and philanthropist.
Read To Rover: Parents may register their children ages 7 and older for the fall session of "Read To Rover" at Fremont Public Library. The program will be from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, beginning this Wednesday and ending Oct. 24.
In "Read To Rover," children practice their skills by reading aloud to a certified therapy dog. The children will sign up for the same 15-minute slot for the six-week session. Because a permission form and waiver are required, parents must register their children in person at the Youth Services desk.
The certified therapy dogs are provided by Rainbow Animal-Assisted Therapy of Chicago.
Read for the Record: On Thursday, Fremont Public Library will join in Jumpstart's nationwide "Read for the Record" effort to encourage early literacy and raise money to put books into the hands of low-income children by having as many people as possible read the same book on the same day. For every participant in every reading session, Jumpstart will receive $1, up to $100,000. Additionally, all money from purchases of the special edition of this year's book, "The Story of Ferdinand," by Munro Leaf, will go to Jumpstart.
Fremont's Youth Services librarians will read "The Story of Ferdinand" at 10:30 a.m., and 12:30, 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. Event organizers hope to break last year's record for the largest shared reading experience: 150,000 people on Aug. 24, 2006.
