Boston 10, New York 1

Josh Beckett's 19th victory pushed back the surging New York Yankees.

Beckett pitched 3-hit ball over 7 innings, leading Boston to a 10-1 win Saturday that dropped the New York Yankees 5½ games back of the first-place Red Sox with a little more than two weeks to play.

In a physical game that featured a bruising home-plate collision and two more hit batters, David Ortiz went 3-for-3 with a 2-run double and Eric Hinske homered. Boston lowered its magic number to nine for clinching the division and ending the Yankees' streak of nine consecutive AL titles.

New York had rallied from a 7-2 deficit Friday to beat Boston for the fifth straight time, but Beckett (19-6) stopped the Yankees' momentum. He allowed 1 run and a walk while striking out seven, winning his third straight start. He is likely to have three tries to reach 20 wins for the first time in his career.

Chien-Ming Wang (18-7), who had won his previous five starts, allowed 5 runs, 9 hits and 3 walks in 5 2-3 innings. Boston knocked out Wang in a 3-run sixth that boosted the lead to 5-1, then scored 4 more runs in the seventh, when the Yankees needed five pitchers to get out of the inning.

Derek Jeter homered in the first inning for the Yankees.
