Palatine to get new Japanese restaurant

A new Japanese-style restaurant is coming to Northwest Highway and the chefs are going to put on a show for diners.

Like a lot of the teppan-yaki style eateries, the new House of Sumo will let you sit back and watch your food being cooked in front of you. It will serve sushi, steak, chicken and seafood. Entrees will be in the $18-$30 range.

The restaurant, run by Seung Kim, will go in the spot of the former Szechwan House, which is now closed. It's at 321 E. Northwest Highway.

Kim says it should be open by Dec. 1. Officials say the new eatery will fill a niche in the Palatine restaurant market.

Fire department gets grant: The Palatine Fire Department has received a $26,254 grant to buy equipment such as a self-contained breathing apparatus, personal escape rope bags, EMS equipment and a hand-held oxygen monitoring device. In addition, the money will be used to buy a dispatch alerting system installed in the Lake Zurich Fire Department to support a mutual aid agreement between the two departments. The money is being given by Mesirow Financial and Firemen's Fund Insurance Company. A formal public grant presentation is today at 10 a.m. at Station 84, 220 W. Illinois Avenue.

PAFA collection a hit: The Palatine Amateur Football Association's food drive last weekend was a huge success. Due to the generosity of the families, friends and the community, PAFA more than 1,000 pounds of food for the Palatine Township Food Pantry, in addition to money. Officials with the football league say they're thrilled to give back to the community.

Keep 'em coming: Last week I asked if any readers had unanswered questions about the area. Ask me anything, I challenged. So far, I've gotten a ton of responses and plan to publish the questions and answers in an upcoming column. One has already been answered, though. Reader John Hurley asked why the Towne Square park lights were going on in the middle of the night. According to park district officials, the timer was off by seven hours. The problem has now been fixed and Hurley reports the park is lit up at the proper time. E-mail me anything you want to know about the Palatine area and I'll try my best to get an answer.
