Des Plaines to make last pickup of storm debris

The city is still reeling from last month's devastating flooding and storms.

There will be a final sweep to pick up storm debris starting Monday.

Des Plaines Public Works workers have completed major debris removal for the entire city. The final citywide sweep will catch those remaining branches that may have been missed.

It will be the last chipping operation of the year, city officials said.

Once it's complete, staff will prepare equipment for leaf season.

Two public works crews will continue tree-trimming operations.

Stroger in town: Cook County Board President Todd Stroger held an interesting public meeting earlier this week in Des Plaines. But more than one official noted the low resident turnout.

Mc-Deal?: Mayor Arredia said McDonald's Corp. is on board for a planned history campus incorporating the fast-food giant's museum. There's no word on whether the global company would give money toward the massive project. The history center wants to relocate to the area off Lee Street, and spruce up a motel that was the first hospital in the Northwest suburbs. The plan also would involve moving the Kinder house across Miner Street to the campus. The plan is in the beginning stages.

Prayer breakfast: Des Plaines will go spiritual on Oct. 18. Des Plaines Mayor Tony Arredia is hosting the annual mayor's prayer breakfast.

The annual cooperative event hosted by the Des Plaines Ministerial Association and the city will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Casa Royale Banquets, 783 Lee St.

The event will feature Nancy Loo, Fox-TV news anchor.

Arredia said this year's theme will focus on how the past affects who people are today.

Loo, who was born in Hong Kong, has reported news from all over the world. She currently anchors the morning news at 5 a.m. and 7 a.m.

After breakfast at 7:30 a.m., local clergy members representing various denominations will speak.

The Rev. Gene Dyer, representative of the Ministerial Association and pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church, started planning for the event in the spring.

Proceeds from the breakfast will benefit the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance Burn Camp.

Tickets are available for $25 a person in the Mayor's Office, 6th Floor, City Hall, 1420 Miner St. Des Plaines, IL 60016.

Checks must be made payable to the Des Plaines Ministerial Association.

The Self-Help Closet & Pantry of Des Plaines presents a fashion show fundraiser called Hunger Knows No Season at 6 p.m. on Oct. 11 at Casa Royale Banquets, 783 Lee St. in downtown Des Plaines.

The event includes a dinner meal and features fashions from Carson's and Coldwater Creek.

There also will be a raffle and silent auction. Tickets are $35.
