Residents want help to stem flooding problems

Although the majority of Buffalo Grove weathered the Aug. 23 storms fairly well, a few residents had to deal with flooding problems.

Several residents from Beechwood and Weidner roads said during Tuesday's village board meeting that their streets literally became rivers during the height of the storm.

"I also have a great fear that there's going to be a tragedy," Beechwood resident Eleanor Hesse said. "There's too much water rushing down the street."

Although that water receded fairly quickly, it still left many homeowners with flooded first floors and basements.

Many of the homes on those streets have garages that are lower than the street, so water flows more easily into their houses.

Darla Collins, who also lives on Beechwood, said residents in that area want the village to try to alleviate some of the water that tends to build up there.

"It would seem that there's a problem with sufficient sewer to accept this water in the street," she said.

Buffalo Grove Village Manager Bill Brimm said he plans to have a report prepared for the board in two weeks that will look at some potential solutions for flooding.

He said the village could hire an independent engineering firm that could implement devices to direct the water away from the streets and into ditches.

"We'll study it; we won't have anything done in two weeks, but we'll update what we'd recommend," he said.
