Shooting suspect's bond set
Bond was set Monday at $100,000 for a Rockford man accused of firing gunshots Saturday morning near Huff School in Elgin.
Denarrell D. Mabry, 20, of 1965 N. Riverside Blvd. #104, was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school, aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon, police said.
Mabry got into a dispute with several men in a red truck around 11:45 a.m. Saturday at Illinois Avenue and Hastings Street, police said.
The truck left and Mabry fired a .357 revolver at it, striking it several times, police said.
The people in the truck chased Mabry into Ray's Restaurant at 801 St. Charles St. in Elgin, where there was a brawl and Mabry was hit over the head with a baseball bat, police said.
Mabry escaped from the restaurant and an Elgin officer outside saw him hand the gun to his roommate, Larrell Cannon, police said.
Cannon, 25, was charged with two counts of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. His bond was set at $25,000.
Both Mabry and Cannon are on parole from prison. Mabry is on parole for a drug conviction. Cannon is on parole for a gun charge.
They could be tried first for parole violations, even if they post their $100,000 and $25,000 bonds.
Mabry was released Sunday from Sherman Hospital, where he was treated for head injuries.
Both Cannon and Mabry are being held in the Kane County jail. Cannon has a Sept. 21 court date and Mabry has a Sept. 27 date, both at the Kane County Judicial Center.
