Police believe gunman still at large in Elgin shooting

A 25-year-old man was charged in connection with a shooting incident near an Elgin school, but police said Sunday the shooter may still be at large.

Larrell Cannon, 25, of 1965 W. Riverside Blvd., Rockford, was charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, according to the Kane County state's attorney's office.

Police said they do not think Cannon was the shooter in the incident, which occurred at 11:45 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Hastings Street and Illinois Avenue near Huff Elementary School.

More likely, Cannon was handed the gun after the shooting and the person who fired the shots is still at large, police said.

No one is believed to have been hurt in the shooting, which nonetheless stunned and frightened people who were in the area when the shots suddenly rang out.

Cannon's bond was set at $250,000 and he was taken to the Kane County jail. His next court date is scheduled for Sept. 21 at the Kane County Judicial Center.

Cannon was already on probation for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. If he is convicted of the new charges, he could face between six and 28 years in prison.

A number of people in the area witnessed the incident, which appears to have begun when four men started chasing another man and hit him with a baseball bat.

Police said they have two men in custody in connection with the incident and it is likely one of them will be charged on Monday.
