New session of yoga classes starting at center
A new six-week session of yoga classes for all levels begins this week at the Himalayan Yoga and Meditation Center, 109 W. Slade St., Palatine.
Morning, lunchtime, evening and weekend classes are available. For a complete listing, visit hymcillinois.com or call the center for a schedule at (847) 221-5250.
The Tuesday Yoga I and II class, held from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m., is taught by Anita Maher. The class offers Hatha yoga in what Maher calls a "yin" style, followed by a flow of movements.
The warm-up poses are held longer for an increased stretch, followed by an invigorating linking of poses known as vinyasa or flow yoga.
Maher has been a yoga student for over 20 years, taking classes with Baron Baptiste, Sean Corn, Rodney Yee, and other well-known teachers. Maher is certified with the Lotus Yoga Teachers Association.
A new Monday class, Change of Life Yoga for ages 50-plus, begins Sept. 17 from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Taught by Nancy Chamberlain, it will address ways in which a yoga practice can alleviate symptoms of menopause.
Topics covered include using breath work to alleviate hot flashes, keeping flexible to prevent aching joints, balance work, meditation, and poses to lift mood and help sleep.
Chamberlain also teaches classes in Arlington Heights and Buffalo Grove.
