Smith out for the year with ACL
South Elgin junior wide receiver Josh Smith, also a key member of the school's basketball team, will miss the rest of the football season and the upcoming basketball season due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee.
Smith suffered the injury while blocking on a kickoff return during the second quarter of last week's 29-12 loss to Geneva.
He will undergo surgery on Sept. 28 and is expected to be sidelined the entire school year.
"I found out (Thursday) around 3 o'clock," said Smith, who wore his jersey and a pair of shorts while supporting his teammates on the sideline Saturday against East Aurora, the Storm's first-ever varsity football win.
"Nine months, that's what they're saying. At least I'm not a senior."
In just over five quarters of action this season, Smith caught 8 balls for 137 yards and 1 touchdown.
Smith was named to the Daily Herald Fox Valley All-Area Football Team as a sophomore in 2006 after he made 37 receptions for 592 yards and 7 touchdowns.
