Volunteer awarded scholarship from St. Peter's
Matthew Shultz has been awarded the St. Peter Catholic Church Scholarship for 2007-08. He is a parishioner at the church and a graduate of Geneva High School.
Shultz is attending Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, where he is studying to become a high school science teacher.
He received the scholarship for his academic standing and for what church leaders saw as his consistent work in Christian development. Shultz has also been recognized for his leadership and volunteer contributions in his school and scouting organizations.
Shultz recently became an Eagle Scout and earlier in the year he was a recipient of the St. Peter Church Golden Rose award for service and living Christian values. Teachers, peers, parishioners and Scouting leaders offered input recognizing Shultz as a leader and positive role model.
Shultz has a passion for science, particularly biology, and also enjoyed acting, writing and producing theater at Geneva High School.
Shultz acknowledged that St. Peter parish contributed to his life and development. He attributes his success to his parents, Jim and Mary Shultz.
Barn sale at fairgrounds: The barn sale, which has been part of September in the Tri-Cities for 31 years, will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Kane County Fairgrounds on Randall Road between routes 64 and 38 in St. Charles.
Throughout the years, the barn sale has been sponsored in alternate years by Catholic churches in the Tri-Cities.
This year St. Peter Catholic Church in Geneva has organized the massive effort, which takes about 1,000 volunteers. St. Peter, which had sponsored the barn sale in previous years, accepted the task after Holy Cross in Batavia organized the sale for the last ten years.
Bargain hunters love to browse among the thousands of used items which include adult and children's clothing, toys, furniture and books. The sale has a festival atmosphere and includes a live and silent auction and a car raffle (there is a $20,000 cash option).
