Firefighters to hold open house at new training center
If you're reading this and it's Sunday afternoon, put it down immediately, turn on the television and watch the men's final of the U.S. Open. Then continue reading.
If you've been glued to your TV watching the U.S. Open -- or something else -- for the past week, you may have missed a few changes in your community.
The Huntley Fire Protection District has finished work on a new training tower in northwest Huntley.
The tower, located at Coyne Station and Ernesti roads, will enable firefighters from Huntley and other neighboring communities to train for a variety of rescues.
The tower is located on the site that will eventually house a new fire station. The station will serve future residents of northwest Huntley, like the Talamore subdivision that's under construction.
To mark both the completion of the training tower and the fire district's 50th anniversary, firefighters are hosting an open house from noon to 3 p.m. on Sept. 16 at the new training center.
Apply for discounted lunch
With the start of a new school year, Community Unit District 300 wants to make sure your children are getting enough food to make it through tomorrow's lessons on igneous rocks and the endocrine system.
As it has in previous years, District 300 is offering free or reduced-price lunches to qualified families in all of its schools.
If you think your child might qualify, or you know someone who would be interested, contact the school the child attends or visit the district office at 300 Cleveland Ave. in Carpentersville to fill out an application.
Apply to school committees
If you've always wanted to take a more active role in your child's education, now is your chance.
District 300 is accepting applications for the six committees that advise the school board -- construction and facility oversight; discipline; education; finance; human resources; and policy and legislation.
The committees discuss and vote on matters affecting the school district -- but their vote is not binding on the school board.
The district will accept applications throughout the year. School board President Joe Stevens will review the applications and make appointments to the various committees. Stevens' appointments must be approved by the school board.
You will be notified within three to six weeks of applying if you have been appointed to a committee. Committees that receive no citizen applicants will be composed only of school board members.
If you're interested, make sure you're able to attend the monthly meetings. Community members can be removed or replaced if they miss three meetings in a year.
