Barrington 21, Hersey 0

When Barrington's defense needed to make a big stop, it did. That -- combined with three rather huge plays -- put the Broncos on the way to winning their Mid-Suburban crossover 21-0 at Hersey on Friday night.

"I was really proud about the way the kids responded," said Barrington coach Joe Sanchez. "Obviously tonight the real standout was the way the defense played.

"To come here in a hostile environment and come out with a 'W' feels pretty good right now."

The Huskies (0-3) didn't make it easy, though, and when the Broncos (2-1) found a hole, they charged.

In the second quarter, Barrington scored on just its second play of the drive when quarterback Cody Seeger hung on and ran in 67 yards to make it 6-0 with two minutes left in the half.

The Broncos found time for another 2-play drive with Terrance Terry finishing the first half with a 68-yard TD run. This time, a 2-point conversion worked when Seeger pitched to JC Stickney, who passed to Andrew Cobb in the end zone for a 14-0 lead.

Terry did his fair share of running, too. The sophomore running back collected 197 yards on 18 carries to lead Barrington's 342-yard rushing performance.

"We played as a team," said Terry, who heavily credited his line with giving him the holes to run through. "The defense did what they had to do. The offensive line did a great job -- I didn't really have to do anything but run through wide open holes."

Midway through the third, Barrington had a longer drive it converted on -- 3 plays. The Broncos scored on a long bomb thrown by Seeger that Stickney just grabbed with his left hand. He then ran in the final 20 yards of the 76-yard TD to make it 21-0.

Hersey quarterback Scott Kinsel helped keep his offense moving by throwing for 126 yards.

Three times the Huskies got in the red zone, but a blocked field goal, a missed field goal and a loss at fourth-and-goal from 7 yards all kept the hosts from the scoreboard. Two more times Hersey also drove to Barrington's 20.

"That was the story of the game," said Hersey coach Mark Gunther. "We got it inside the 20 off of turnovers, we drove it inside the 20 and we didn't come away with any points."

Hersey's defense forced 2 Barrington turnovers when Anthony Maginity picked off a pass and Tim Lukas recovered a fumble.

"I'm just so proud of our kids' effort and the way we improved from last week to this week," Gunther said. "We have all sorts of character, but character doesn't necessarily win ball games. But character is what's going to carry us to the next level."
