Rosemont's luxury theater debuts today

The movies are on the house this weekend at a new 18-screen theater that says it prides itself on its luxurious VIP treatment.

Muvico Rosemont 18 Theaters will be showing free movies from 4 to 10 p.m. today. On Saturday and Sunday, admission will be free from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the theater, 9701 Bryn Mawr Ave.

The feature films, described as second-run movies, will run on all 18 screens.

On Saturday, all proceeds from the $1 popcorn and $1 soft drink sales will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Illinois, said Madonna Duncan, spokeswoman for Muvico.

On Wednesday, the public is welcome to attend a free open house luncheon from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Muvico will start showing new films when it officially opens on Sept. 14. The Florida-based theater chain vows to bring luxury back to the movies, featuring a VIP area and restaurant. Menu items range in price from $8 to $25.

VIP tickets cost $15 and include free popcorn and valet parking. Those 21 and over can enjoy alcoholic drinks and food with their movie.

"It's luxurious. It changes my mind about going to the local (theater) for the experience," Duncan said.

Childcare for $9 an hour is offered for 3- to 8-year-old children.

Muvico's first theater in the Midwest is part of the village's Rosemont Walk entertainment district.

Rosemont village officials last month severed ties with a company that had planned a water park, as they work to replace it with a new water park project.
