Propane tank leak leads to evacuations in Wheeling
Emergency response teams in Wheeling Thursday night evacuated at least 34 homes, five businesses and a school in the midst of an open house due to a leaking propane tank nearby, ABC7 reported.
The incident started at about 6:30 p.m., when a 5,000-gallon propane tank began leaking at a chemical company on the 400 block of Denniston Court.
The small street is located just off the west side of Wheeling Road, about halfway between Dundee Road to the north and Hintz Road to the south.
The company at that location is a manufacturer of oil and antifreeze, according to ABC7.
Wheeling fire officials said vapors were being released into the air, but strong winds were sweeping away the fumes, ABC7 reported.
There were no reports of injuries or explosions as a result of the leak.
Hazardous material crews called to the scene were moving the contents of the leaking tank to another tank.
At 10 p.m., there were about 25 firefighters on the scene, according to ABC7.
