One driver in hospital after collision in Gurnee

A nearly head-on collision between two vehicles near Gurnee Thursday morning left one driver hospitalized and the other uninjured.

Meghan Miller, 26, of Elkhorn, Wis., was taken by Flight for Life helicopter to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge after the collision.

Requests for her condition Thursday night went unanswered by the hospital, though paramedics did not believe her serious injuries were life-threatening.

The other driver, 46-year-old Mark Jessen of Lindenhurst, refused treatment at the scene.

Sgt. Christopher Thompson of the Lake County sheriff's office said the collision occurred just before 7 a.m. on a curve of Hunt Club Road south of Anacona Road.

An investigation determined that Miller was driving a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am north on Hunt Club Road when she apparently drove far to the right and onto the shoulder, Thompson said. Possibly overcorrecting, she then crossed over into the southbound lane, causing an offset collision with the side of Jessen's 1998 Toyota Land Cruiser.

Miller was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle, suffering multiple traumatic injuries.

Though Miller had not been formally charged as of Thursday night, investigators intended to charge her with improper lane use, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and not wearing a seat belt, Thompson said.
