Man surrenders to Naperville Special Response Team

The Naperville Police Department's Special Response Team succeeded in getting a suicidal man to surrender without incident after hours of negotiating today.

The specially trained unit was called to a condominium complex in the 200 block of East Bailey Road shortly after 10:30 a.m. It took several hours before the man would even talk to police, but eventually he began communicating with officers. He was taken to Edward Hospital for treatment around 5:30 p.m., police said.

The unidentified man threatened to hurt himself after a fight with his girlfriend, police said.

After the fight, the woman left the unit and went to a nearby restaurant where she called police.

The complex is located between Naper Boulevard and Washington Street. None of the surrounding streets were closed, but the building where the man was holed up eventually was evacuated as a precaution, police said.
