Hear about some good reads at book review club

Do you want to hear about a good book?

Perhaps you should check out the Palatine Book Review Club, which meets the third Tuesday of each month from September to May, except for December.

The club has a rich history, having been in Palatine for over 50 years. It is run by Marilyn Majus and Phil Louis. Professional reviewers Denise Philpod and Suzanne Hales present the reviews.

The club generally attracts an older crowd, but adults of all ages are invited. You do not have to read the book prior to the meeting and new members are always welcome, Majus said.

"They usually do a book on the best-seller lists," Majus said. "Sometimes the reviews are done in a dramatic style. It's very nice. When they're through, you know the whole book."

The club charges yearly dues of $25, which pays for the professional reviewers.

In addition, lunch costs $17 per meeting, which includes tax and tip, and provides salad, lunch, drink and dessert.

The club meets at Vittorio's, at Northwest Highway and Hicks Road. Seating opens at 11:30 a.m., when members can visit with each other. Lunch and the review are generally from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

If you would like more information on joining the group, call Marilyn Majus at (847) 358-1008 or Phil Louis at (847) 934-3806.

It's a party: The Rotary Club of Palatine will host Party Over Palatine VI from 6 to 10 p.m. Sept. 14 at Durty Nellie's.

The evening will feature hors d'oeuvres, drinks and live music by Old School. Funds raised will support the new Rotary Green at Smith Street and Palatine Road, as well as local charities.

Advance tickets cost $45 each, tickets at the door cost $50 each. Tickets and membership information are available through Rotary Club members and the village of Palatine. Visit www.palatinerotary.com for more information.
