Tell me what you want to know

Got anything on your mind? Something you really want to know about Palatine, Inverness or the surrounding area?

Ask me.

As reporters, a lot of the stuff we write comes from press releases and business done by local governments. These people want to get news in the paper and have people read all about them.

But as residents of the towns, what do you want to know? I am open to finding out anything -- no matter how big or small it is.

Dedication in Inverness: A long-awaited project in Inverness is done and will be dedicated Saturday. At 11 a.m., there will be a ceremony for the Inverness Veterans Memorial, near the village hall on Baldwin Road. Local congressmen Mark Kirk and Melissa Bean will be at the event, along with the Marine Corps color guard and rifle team.

The structure honors men and women in all military branches, but is dedicated to Marine Cpl. Peter J. Giannopoulos, who died in Iraq in 2004. His family lives in Inverness.

Who doesn't want a guitar?:

This Sunday, there will be an auction at Durty Nellie's from 1 to 3 p.m. for the cool guitars you've seen around town. It's being put on by the Palatine Public Library Foundation. Each guitar has been decorated by local artists and displayed all summer at local businesses. The auction is open to the public. Tickets are free and available at the library.

New Haskana debuts: Stop in to Haskana Hair Design on Saturday to see a whole new business. The cosmetology school at 341 W. Northwest Highway is under new management and wants to show off the changes. The open house is from noon to 4 p.m. at the business and prizes will be given away. The current school has been in Palatine for 24 years, run by d Stallman. New owner Aimee Schimanski took it over in June and says the open house is intended for businesses, clients or prospective students. "She has been a big part of the community. We just want to follow in her footsteps," said Schimanski.

Food + Girls = Fun: The Palatine Women's Club is inviting all women in the Northwest suburban area to a kickoff dinner at The Presbyterian Church, 800 E. Palatine Road. It's Sept. 18 at 6:30 p.m. The evening is free and current members will provide a potluck dinner for all guests. Might as well go over there and get some free food. The group is a service organization that serves women and children. Go to www.palatine-womens-club.org for more information or call (847) 934-8888.
