Little Listeners: The library is now offering programs intended to coach parents and caregivers in supporting children's language skills through rhymes, stories and language-building activities. These programs are designed for one-on-one interaction between a child and an adult partner; no other siblings. Children must be the proper age by the start of the program. Registration is under way.
• Little Listeners A -- 3 to 17 months: 1:30 p.m. Thursdays, today through 27.
• Little Listeners B -- 15 to 28 months: 6:30 p.m. Thursdays, today through 27.
• Little Listeners C -- 2- to 3-years-old: 9:30 a.m. Thursdays, today through 27.
Lakes Literary League: The Lakes Literary League will meet at 7 p.m. today. Meet other local writers, share techniques or just talk about writing. Whether published or not, new members are welcome.
• At 7 p.m. Oct. 4, the Lakes Literary League will welcome featured speaker Janet Deaver-Pack, a Lake Geneva author, who will explain the steps of getting a manuscript published. Details on how to research potential publishers as well as creative packaging ideas will be shared.
The group meets at 7 p.m. the first Thursday of each month. All writers published or not, are encouraged to attend and share their writing. Drop-off and pick up copies of writing at the Adult Reference Desk.
Friday Fun Faire: Fridays present opportunities for 3-year-olds to kindergartners to enjoy a story and make a craft. Adult supervision required.
Registration is under way to join the sessions offered at 9:15 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Friday and Oct. 5 and 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sept. 21 and Oct. 19.
Adult book discussion: The adult book discussion group meets at 10 a.m. the second Saturday of each month in the library's Wilton Room. Refreshments are served, and new members are welcome.
On Saturday, the topic will be "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time: A Novel," by Mark Haddon. Despite his overwhelming fear of interacting with people, Christopher, a mathematically-gifted, autistic 15-year-old boy, decides to investigate the murder of a neighbor's dog and uncovers secret information about his mother.
On Oct. 13, the topic will be "A Farewell to Arms" by Ernest Hemingway, the story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front during World War I and his love for an English nurse.
One Book, One Community: Meet Mark Leonard, author of "The Ride of Our Lives," at 2 p.m. Sunday. Learn about his life as a journalist and what inspired him to write the book. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome to attend. A book sale and signing will follow the program.
"The Ride of Our Lives" is the Lake Villa District Library's fifth One Book, One Community selection. The One Book, One Community initiative is aimed at promoting inter-generational reading, discussion and connection.
Mike Leonard was faced with the complications of raising children while dealing with the realities of aging parents. One day after a sad phone call from his parents, he wondered whether his parents' senior living facility in the middle of the Arizona desert would ever feel like home. So, thanks to two RVs and a month-long journey, he connected his parents and his children to discover the family's past and celebrate its future.
Internet for beginners: Internet for beginners will be offered at 1 p.m. Wednesday and Oct. 10. Join an instructive lesson on basic Internet searching. Register at the adult reference desk or call (847) 356-7711.
Lunchtime @ the Library: Bring a lunch and the library will provide a guest speaker, beverage and dessert. The program fare varies each month. Call to register or stop by the Adult Reference Desk.
September's program is "Edward Hopper & the Poetry of Ordinary Life" at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 12. A preview to an upcoming exhibit at the Chicago Art Institute, Claire Cross will discuss the work of Edward Hopper. See how this painter captured the look of urban streets, isolated country roads, gaudy theaters, and hotel rooms, all bearing an aura of loneliness.
