Briefs: More Walgreens to open

DEERFIELD -- Walgreen Co. said Wednesday it expects to open 550 stores in fiscal 2008, with 475 net new stores after relocations and closings. As of Friday, the company operated 5,992 drugstores in 48 states and Puerto Rico. Walgreen also said its same-store sales rose 6.5 percent in August as both pharmacy and front-end sales grew. Same-store sales for only the front end of the stores, which excludes prescription sales, grew 6.6 percent during the month. Total sales in August rose 10 percent to $4.62 billion from $4.19 billion in the prior year period.

Vance hires Eppel as vice president

LINCOLNSHIRE -- Vance Publishing Corp. named Lori Eppel to the position of vice president, finance. Vance Publishing, a business information and communications company, embarked on an expansion program several years ago to diversify its revenues. Eppel's 23-year career has been in the book and magazine publishing industry.
