Litter can harm our wildlife friends

For the last week or so, several people in Libertyville have been desperately trying to help a blue heron, a Butler Lake resident, with his predicament. He(or she) somehow got a beer-can stuck on the end of his beak, and many walkers and joggers were very concerned.

I am only one of quite a few people that called the Libertyville Police Department non-emergency line. Nearly every day we saw squad cars, police officers, people in rowboats, and even a fire truck , all trying to find and capture the bird.

Unfortunately, he eluded all his would-be rescuers, and by now it is probably too late to help him, as it is almost two weeks since the first attempt. I wish that somehow all these people could be acknowledged, perhaps by an article in the paper. It probably won't stop people from thoughtlessly littering. But at least people should know that these good people tried their hardest to help a fellow-creature in distress. I thank each and every one of them.
