Free certified nursing assistant training offered

Presbyterian Homes' The Moorings of Arlington Heights is sponsoring a nine-week, tuition-free Basic Nurse Assistant Training Program beginning Sept. 17. Graduates who pass a state competency test given by the Illinois Department of Public Health become Certified Nursing Assistants. In the private sector, a Certified Nursing Assistant training course would cost between $400 and $600.

Participants in the training class:

• Must be at least 18 years of age

• Must attend a orientation class and interview to be held 9 a.m. Sept. 10 in the Health Center

• Pass a reading comprehension test.

The nine-week course runs until Nov. 16 and will be held Monday through Friday at The Moorings of Arlington Heights, a continuing care retirement community, at 811 E. Central Road.

Classroom days will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Clinical days or "hands-on" training is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Clinical days take place in the Health Care Center at The Moorings and allow the students to apply what they have learned.

Though tuition is free, there are associated fees of $115 and a $50 fee in the form of a money order required by The Illinois Department of Public Health to take the competency exam for certification. The fees are due the final week of class. Presbyterian Homes is seeking individuals who are caring and compassionate. To reserve a place at the orientation, or for more information about the course, please contact Cheryl Cole at (847) 956-4448.

Certified Nursing Assistants are employed by hospitals, long-term care facilities, home health agencies and by families for in-home care. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, an additional 874,000 paraprofessional, direct care workers will be needed by the year 2010.
