Bicyclist killed when he hits car in Des Plaines
A Chicago man was killed Tuesday afternoon in Des Plaines after he struck the side of a car on his bike, police said.
Pavlo Hayda, of 5000 N. Cumberland Ave., Chicago, was pronounced dead about 12:30 p.m. at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.
Hayda, 42, was riding a bicycle east on Oakton Street at 11:11 a.m. when he hit the side of a car exiting the driveway at 1925 E. Oakton St.
Edward Strabel, 51, the driver of the car and a resident at that address, was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and failure to exercise due caution, police said.
Des Plaines police said Hayda suffered head injuries, and they believe he dropped his car off at a nearby dealership. They are unsure if Hayda worked in the area.
