Woods, Mickelson paired today

The first two days of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson were a showcase for the PGA Tour Playoffs. This time figures to be far more meaningful.

Never mind that neither of them was in the lead Sunday at the Deutsche Bank Championship in Norton, Mass. That belonged to Brett Wetterich, who saved himself with an amazing par and emerged from the pack with an eagle on his way to a 5-under 66 for a 1-shot lead over Arron Oberholser (66) at TPC Boston.

The focus, not to mention the crowds, shifts to Woods and Mickelson in a Labor Day finish. The longtime rivals will be paired in the final round for the first time since the 2005 Ford Championship at Doral. Neither of them knew it when they signed their cards -- Mickelson after scrambling for a 68 that left him 2 shots behind, Woods after wasting a good round by 3-putting the last two greens for a 67 to finish 3 shots behind Wetterich.

State Farm Classic: Sherri Steinhauer held off a late charge by Christina Kim for a 1-stroke victory in the LPGA State Farm Classic at Springfield. The 44-year-old Steinhauer, who led after every round, finished at 17-under 271 for the four-day tournament at Springfield's Panther Creek Country Club. The title is Steinhauer's eighth in her 22 years on tour.

Steinhauer shot a 5-under 67 and held off a pack of players who started the final round within 3 strokes of the lead. Kim closed with a 66. Defending champion Annika Sorenstam shot a 67 to tie for third with Rachel Hetherington (69) at 14 under.

Johnnie Walker Championship: Marc Warren birdied the second hole of a playoff with Simon Wakefield to become the first Scot to win the European Tour's Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, Scotland. Warren birdied the 18th at Gleneagles to finish with a 69 and get into a playoff with Wakefield, the Englishman who shot a 70 to match Warren at 12-under 280.
