Donation helps service at college bookstore

A $78,000 donation by South Eastern Book Co., a Kentucky-based book supplier will mean improved service for students at the ECC Bookstore.

The company, based in Murray, Ky., was recognized for its donation by the District 509 Board of Trustees during its Aug. 14 meeting.

According to Frank Hernandez, ECC's director of auxiliary enterprises, the donation was the result of a partnership between the bookstore and the company.

Hernandez said the bookstore and the company share similar student-centric goals of improving the availability of used textbooks to provide a lower-cost alternative for students, promoting a strong textbook buy-back program and creating an inviting space for students to enjoy.

One of the major improvements to the bookstore is that the old, long checkout counter has been replaced by a smaller counter that will be more convenient for students waiting in line. Hernandez said the new configuration, which includes four new cash registers, will meet student demand for faster service.

The improvements also include a new sitting area located directly behind the counter. Featured here are tables and chairs where visitors can sit and browse through books or do work. A large flat-panel high definition television that will show news reports and weather also is being planned for the space. The tables and chairs can be easily removed to accommodate longer lines at the checkout counter.

"We wanted to focus on the students by making the bookstore more contemporary and convenient," said Hernandez.

The most important feature students won't notice is the fact that nearly the bookstore's entire book inventory is on the shelves. Hernandez said the bookstore has become more disciplined in managing its inventory and is capable of working with suppliers to obtain books quickly -- sometimes by the next day.

Other features of the renovation include improved office and storage space, and the installation of new windows. Work was done over the summer.
