Maine South 40, Warren 13

It seemed as though Charlie Goro could do nothing wrong Saturday.

Even if he wasn't perfect, Goro and his Maine South teammates made it look that way in a 40-13 victory over visiting Warren on a pristine late-summer afternoon.

Goro, the Hawks' junior quarterback completed 14 of 15 passes for 253 yards and a staggering 5 touchdowns as Maine South improved to 2-0 before a large and enthusiastic home audience.

Lost in Goro's impressive stat line were an array of excellent catches by Hawks receivers against tight coverage. Maine South wideouts Joey Orlando and Danny Benson combined with running back David Chao for the 5 touchdown catches and several other athletic grabs in traffic to stake their team to a 40-0 halftime lead.

Goro was able to escape pressure and get the ball away on a few occasions when an incomplete pass would have been a relatively positive outcome. But his throws kept finding friendly hands, which seldom let him down.

"Coming into this game we had a bunch of film sessions and knew what they would be coming with on defense," Goro said. "So it was like a chess match. But my receivers were making some ridiculous catches. It felt like I throw a duck up, and they would come down with it. I think that's what happened a couple times."

Coach David Inserra's Hawks were penalized only four times for 30 total yards and did not turn the ball over.

"We executed," Inserra said. "Charlie made some smart decisions with the ball. (He was) poised and the receivers ran some great routes."

Not to be outdone by their prolific offensive counterpart, the Maine South defense was stern and efficient in the game's lopsided first half. Warren (0-2) failed to gain a single first down before intermission. For the game, the Blue Devils gained just 87 rushing yards -- most of them after the game's outcome had been essentially decided.

Greg Kennedy led Warren in rushing yardage with 47 yards on 15 carries.

Inserra gave credit to linebackers Chris Fahey and Pat Clark who anchored the defense, which collected 2 interceptions and recovered a fumble.

After the victory, Inserra reminded his team that a great deal of work and discipline is required to achieve the team's championship aspirations.

"I wrote on the board that it's all about the man in the (mirror)," he said. "You've got to look yourself in the eyes after the game and know that you did your very best. That's what we preach. You have to answer to yourself."
