Fire falls on 2nd-half goal
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- A second-half goal by Juan Pablo Angel gave the New York Red Bulls a 1-0 win over the Chicago Fire on Saturday night.
Angel's goal in the 75th minute was his 14th of the season and tied him for the MSL lead.
New York's win snapped a two-game losing streak and enabled the Red Bulls (11-9-3) to hold onto third place in the MLS Eastern Conference standings, behind New England and D.C. United.
The Fire dropped to 7-10-5 overall, next to last in the conference.
Rookie midfielder Dane Richards stole the ball from Fire defender Diego Gutierrez then slid between two defenders to get the ball to Angel, who blasted a low liner past goalkeeper Matt Pickens.
The goal tied Angel with Luciano Emilio of D.C. United for the league lead. He is now just two shy of the franchise's single-season record, set by Adolfo Valencia with 16 in 2000.
