Lake Zurich 65, East Aurora 0

There haven't been too many occasions where the Lake Zurich football team has had to come back following a loss, but that is exactly where the Bears found themselves after a tough Week 1 loss, 27-20 against Fremd.

Whether visiting East Aurora was the remedy to cure whatever ailed Lake Zurich or just another step to a state title didn't matter to the Bears. All that mattered to them was getting better after a mistake-filled Week 1 effort.

"We need to be focused in everything we do," said senior linebacker Brent Marks. "That, and we have to execute better in all parts of our game."

For one night, the Bears righted the ship in a big way at the expense of the Tomcats. Lake Zurich rolled up over 300 yards in total offense for the second straight week and limited East Aurora to negative 15 yards from scrimmage in a 65-0 win.

"For as many mistakes as we made this past week, tonight was about concentrating on us and what we do," said Lake Zurich coach Bryan Stortz. "That is what it comes down to. If we are going to get better we have to worry about us."

While the Bears did seem to score at will at times, senior Adam Simpson was able to make a little history on Friday night as he continues to climb the all-time rushing and scoring records list at Lake Zurich (1-1).

With touchdown runs of 12 and 27 yards, Simpson moved into fourth place all time in total points surpassing Eric Amft and Nick Garlisch. Simpson also rushed for 39 yards on the night in just two quarters of work. That moves him into fifth place all-time with 1,700 career rushing yards.

"That is a great honor for (Adam)," Stortz said. "(Simpson) has the ability to set records and they are certainly reachable for him, but it is up to him as to how good a football player he can be."

Simpson opened the first-quarter scoring, then watched as the Bears' offense rolled up 44 first-half points.

"It's nice to think about (the records)," Simpson said. "But as a team, we have to get better and it has to start this week with Stevenson."

Defensively, Lake Zurich was especially stingy in the running game against East Aurora (0-2).

The Tomcats rushed 27 times for minus-52 yards on the night.

Lake Zurich's offense was not the only one to hit the end zone as the defense contributed its first safety of the year late in the first quarter. Defensive end Will Koubal sacked East Aurora quarterback David Lee in the end zone for a safety and a 16-0 advantage.

Earlier in the first quarter, Koubal contributed on special teams with a blocked punt that set up Simpson's first touchdown.

Jon Janus added scoring runs of 10 and 22 yards. Matt Hayes, Kyle Williams, George Knabel, Tanner Witt and Dan Kalcsics also tallied their first touchdowns of the season.
