Hoffman Estates 20, Hersey 7

Backup quarterbacks throw for 236 yards about as often as starting quarterbacks have 106 yards receiving in a game.

Both occurred Friday night and Hoffman Estates (1-1) benefited with a 20-7 victory against visiting Hersey in Mid-Suburban League crossover action.

"(Quarterback) Frankie (Wadas) stepped up today and played a huge role in this win. I am so proud of this kid," wide receiver Blake Heyman said. "He put the ball where it needed to be, and we got the job done."

Wadas followed up an impressive second-half last week with an even more impressive first start this week. The junior made good on Hezler's decision to start him, finishing 21-for-28 with 236 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also ran for a late score.

"The receivers did really good today. We knew that we could take over their defense. We could just nickel and dime them all the way down the field," Wadas said.

Even though Wadas' start pushed Heyman back to wide receiver, there was no animosity.

In fact, their chemistry proved to be spectacular throughout the night. Heyman caught 7 passes for 106 yards, including a touchdown pass he predicted during the huddle.

"I looked at Frankie in the huddle and told him to put it in the back pylon, and if the ball is there, I am going to catch it," the senior said.

Hersey (0-2) had its chances, but the Hawks' defense always came up with the big play.

On the team's second play from scrimmage, senior running back Pat Crost broke free for a 43-yard gain that brought the Huskies to the Hawks' 23. The drive ultimately ended without points when Hersey twice failed to gain an inch from the 3.

"You want to come away with points. You have to finish," Hersey coach Mark Gunther said.

Reid Wilson scored the first touchdown of the game, an 8-yard pass from Wadas.

Trailing 13-0 late in the fourth quarter, Gunther inserted Kevin Siwik at quarterback. The junior promptly led the Huskies (0-2) on a 5-play, 83-yard touchdown drive that took just more than a minute. His heroics, which were capped by a 20-yard touchdown pass to Bobby Vanderpoel, put Hersey right back into the game.

But Hoffman defensive back Donovan Crawford's interception stifled Hersey's next possession.

"We had been working all day with the curl-wheel. We figured they'd come with it. They came with it. We picked it off. It was great," Crawford said.
