Barrington 48, Elk Grove 12
Barrington coach Joe Sanchez may have had some questions entering the season on how he was going to replace co-captain Andre Anderson.
But sophomore speedster Terrence Terry and junior Sam Ojuri did a nice job of alleviating those worries on Friday night against Elk Grove.
Terry rushed for 121 yards on 13 carries and scored on a 85-yard run, while Ojuri, who started the season as a wide-out, gained 120 yards on 4 carries, adding 3 touchdowns and propelling host Barrington (1-1) to a 48-12 Mid-Suburban League crossover victory at Tom Frederick Field.
"Obviously, you don't replace an Andre Anderson," said Sanchez of Anderson, who is now playing at Michigan State. "But what you do is you hope to have enough guys that can offset that. They did a great job, our offensive line did a great job, and our quarterback (Cody Seeger) did a great job of managing the game tonight."
Last week Barrington scored only 6 points as the offense stalled with 5 turnovers, and things didn't get much better for the Broncos in the first quarter on Friday.
Ojuri scored the first of his 3 touchdowns on a 6-yard pass from Seeger (9-for-14, 104 yards), giving the Broncos a 7-0 lead.
Barrington looked to increase its advantage on its ensuing possession, but Elk Grove's Nathan Burke blocked a 27-yard field goal attempt and Kevin McDonald scampered 75 yards, narrowing the deficit to 7-6.
Elk Grove (0-2) added an interception near the end of the first quarter, but a stingy Broncos defense led by linebacker Joey Luna and defensive back Charlie Kocmond stymied the Grenadiers attack.
Seeger then found Kevin Crowley for a 45-yard score early in the second quarter, increasing the advantage to 15-6 and igniting the Broncos' offense.
Ojuri scored on a 33-yard run and Terry's 17 yard run set up a Seeger 1-yard plunge, giving the Broncos a 28-6 halftime lead.
Barrington was just getting started as Terry added an 85-yard touchdown on the first play of the second half.
"We came out early in the game and they were keying on one back," said Terry of his team's adjustment. "We switched to misdirection and bounced the ball to the outside, and tried to get some one-on-one with defensive backs."
Ojuri then scored his third touchdown on a 59-yard run increasing the lead to 42-6 midway through the third quarter.
"Last week we didn't get a touchdown," said Ojuri, who also had 31 receiving yards. "The offense wanted to step it up this week."
Barrington did more than step it up as the Broncos gained 353 of their total 457 yards on the ground.
And the Broncos limited Elk Grove to 150 total yards.
"They did a great job blocking us and getting to the second level," said Elk Grove coach Tom Whalen, whose defense spent much of the game on the field. "We have to play both sides of the field for four quarters."
