Waukegan man drowns in Lake Michigan

The body of a Waukegan man was found in Lake Michigan this morning after he disappeared while swimming late Friday.

David R. Maxwell, 21, of the 400 block of North Avenue, drowned Friday while swimming in Lake Michigan in Pleasant Prairie, Wis., Kenosha County sheriff's department officials said.

Maxwell was swimming with friends around 11:20 p.m. east of Lakeshore Drive and 108th Street Friday. He was in the water for about 20 minutes when he started yelling for help, police said.

Two of his friends, both Gurnee men, tried to save him, police said. One of the men found Maxwell but couldn't pull him to the shore, police said.

Maxwell was found under 7 feet of water at 10 a.m. today after rescuers from Kenosha, Racine and Lake counties searched through the night and into the morning for his body. Maxwell was pronounced dead at 11 a.m.

Alcohol was found at the scene, but police do not know if alcohol caused Maxwell to drown.

An autopsy on Maxwell is being held this afternoon, police said.
