Three charged after shots fired in Elgin

Three Elgin teenagers have been accused of firing several gunshots Thursday afternoon near Sheridan School.

Scottie T. Rasavady, 17, of 310 Hill Ave., and two 15-year-olds were charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, police said Friday.

Witnesses saw the three run into the Hill Avenue home right after the 3:19 p.m. shooting. Police quickly surrounded the house, and the three youths were arrested about 4:20 p.m.

Elgin police said the incident apparently started when the two 15-year-olds were riding home in a car from Elgin High School and saw members of a rival street gang following them in another vehicle.

They used their cell phones to call Rasavady, who said he would be waiting for the rival gang with a gun at Hill Avenue and Franklin Boulevard, police said.

When the two 15-year-olds reached the intersection and got out of their car, Rasavady began firing at the rival gang vehicle as it traveled south on Hill Avenue from Franklin Boulevard, police said.

Police said they recovered a partially loaded 9 mm handgun in a bedroom at the Hill Avenue home, 10 shell casings from the street and the vehicle that was shot during the incident.

Rasavady told officers he placed the handgun in a closet at his home and then took a shower to remove any gunshot residue, police said.

When one of the 15-year-olds saw the police surrounding the house, he took the handgun, hid it in a bedroom and then washed his hands to remove the gunpowder, police said.

Police say Rasavady's street gang has been investigated in connection with the July 26 shooting deaths of two individuals and the wounding of three more at College and North streets in Elgin.

Rasavady was being held Friday in the Kane County jail on $15,000 bond with a Sept. 14 court date at the Kane County Judicial Center.

The two 15-year-olds appeared at a hearing Friday at the Kane County Youth Home in St. Charles.
