Canadian police arrest man with bombs

TORONTO -- Canadian police charged a man with three counts of attempted murder Friday after he was arrested with three home-made bombs in the trunk of his car.

Television cameras followed a line of official vehicles as police closed Toronto streets to move the "improvised explosive devices" to a secure site, where they were to be detonated or dismantled.

The devices were found in a car at a gas station. Police sealed off large swaths of roadway on Friday, snarling traffic in the city's east end while the convoy slowly wound its way to the detonation site.

"They're transporting live explosive devices, so it's a public safety measure," said police spokesman Mark Pugash.

Police said the arrest, late on Thursday, was connected to an investigation into letter bombs delivered recently to three homes in and around Toronto. One person was slightly injured.

A police statement said they believe the accused man, Adel Arnaout, 37, intended to deliver explosives to three other locations. Police gave no details on the size of the bombs.

A police official also said the arrested man was known to law enforcement.

"We've had dealings with him before," the official told reporters without elaborating.

The official also had no comment regarding the type or potency of the explosives used.
