Current events

Matt Titus reported to the Current Events Club Aug. 21 that the Hampshire Township property tax assessments have been posted and residents have until Sept. 10 to file a formal complaint with the Kane County Board of Review if they feel their assessment numbers are not in line with other assessments in their model group. Residents can obtain a complaint form online at the Sun City web portal under Prosperity Assessments Council. A copy of the assessments will be available in the library in the Prairie View Lodge. Rutland Township's assessments will be available Sept. 30.

In further discussion about assessments on a model-to-model basis, Hampshire Township seemed to be higher than Rutland or Grafton. Some exchange took place with regard to the difference in assessments from one township to the other for the same model home. Matt was asked if he had employed the help of area state representatives. He stated they were about ready to.

Governor's money: The second topic was Gov. Rod Blagojevich raising his own salary and those of the legislators as a bribe to back his favorite programs, one of which is his health care program.

Illegal immigration: The hot topic of the day was Elvira Arellano, the illegal immigrant who has been making a fool of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Within the Current Events group it was very difficult to find any sympathy for her cause.

The group as a whole was outraged at politicians for allowing this to happen. A given example was Governor Blagojevich signing a law making it illegal for employers to use employment eligibility verification systems that would help them meet tougher federal rules against hiring illegal workers.

One member suggested that cities that claim to be sanctuary cities be denied federal aid. Chicago, Elgin and Carpentersville are some examples. One member suggested that the government has a secret plan on how to handle the problem since he has sent several letters to our federal representative but has only received one reply indicating his letter was received.

Sweeter side: On the sweeter side, one member informed the group that because of price increases in milk, cocoa and cocoa butter, chocolate candy prices will be up sharply.

Artificial life? Out of Washington on the Associated Press was a story about artificial life likely in three to 10 years.

Triple play

First place in triple play canasta went to Pat Garcia and Carl Macione who scored 109,065 points Aug. 23.
