Rotary awards $13,000 scholarship to resident

The Elk Grove Rotary Club has awarded Elk Grove Village resident Romika Ivy with a scholarship worth $13,000.

Ivy recently received a check for the first installment of $3,000. She will receive $3,000 next year, $3,000 the following year and $4,000 her senior year at Northern Illinois University, as long as she remains a full-time student and continues to attend college.

One important requirement for the scholarship was the student had to be a first generation college-bound student within his or her family.

Ivy recently graduated from Elk Grove High School.

Ivy will be studying to become a defense attorney with dreams of one day having her own law firm.

Hide your age: If you're interested in how to look younger, stop by the Elk Grove Public Library, 1001 Wellington Ave., from 7 to 8 p.m. Sept. 24 for a free seminar called, "The Latest Trends in Cosmetic Surgery."

A board-certified plastic surgeon will discuss your options, which include non-invasive treatments as well as surgery.

Learn more about diabetes: Did you know that 21 percent of people age 60 and over have diabetes?

You can learn more from 8:30 a.m. to noon Oct. 2 at the Elk Grove Park District, 1000 Wellington Ave.

During this program, you will hear from leading experts on diabetes, including a certified nurse diabetic educator, a dietitian, a physical therapist, an occupational therapist, a podiatrist and geriatric social worker about how you can better deal with this disease and complications.

Pioneer Day is back: Travel back in time for an annual family event from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 9 at the Schutte-Biermann Farmhouse Museum, 399 Biesterfield Road in Elk Grove Village.

Take a ride on the horse-drawn wagon, listen to Civil War tunes from the Battlefield Balladeers, and watch as a Civil War magician mystifies you with his tricks and humor.

Don't forget to tour the farmhouse, enjoy live animals at the petting zoo, stroll through the art exhibit in the barn, stuff a scarecrow, and create a popular toy from the past.
