Jury duty now comes with wireless Internet access

Lake County residents called for jury duty now have an additional benefit to make the experience a little more pleasant.

Officials of the 19th Judicial Circuit have recently enabled the jury assembly room and all of the hallways in the courthouse annex for wireless Internet access.

The free service is available for laptops, notebooks, tablets and PDAs, said Court Administrator Robert Zastany.

The service was installed with the jurors in mind first, Zastany said, but is only part of a plan that is designed to bring wireless access to the entire court side of the county administration building.

He said the service has been available for more than a week and the first jurors who were able to use it were very satisfied.

As in the case of all providers of unsecured Internet access networks, court officials remind users that they are responsible for the safety and security of their equipment when using the access.

Hog rustling: In keeping with the ancient adage that it does not matter what it is you have, there is someone out there who will steal it, comes this tale from the county sheriff's office logs.

Daniel Tomaszewski of Antioch Township told police on Sunday that someone had stolen his mailbox.

That's right, stolen his mailbox, not destroyed it.

Of course, it would have been a heinous crime to destroy this particular mailbox given the amount of time and effort Tomaszewski put into it.

The report said the receptacle was crafted from an old metal dairy can that had been painted black and decorated with Harley Davidson decals.

In addition to the decals, the mailbox was also adorned with a snout, ears and a tail creating a "Hog" theme in honor of Tomaszewski's favorite mode of transportation.

Here's hoping police will be on the lookout and that little piggy finds its way back home.

Information needed: Crime Stoppers and the sheriff's office are asking for the public's help in solving a number of thefts that have occurred over the summer at the Volo Antique Mall.

A person caught on surveillance video stealing antique jewelry and coins appears to be a 5-foot-10-inches to 6-foot tall male, 150 to 175 pounds with dark hair and a goatee.

Police believe the man may be staying at a local motel or campground and is driving a red 1997 GMC pickup truck with Arkansas license plate 106 LHA.

Anyone with information about this individual is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at (847) 662-2222.

All information provided is kept confidential and rewards are paid for tips that lead to arrests.
