SIU romps to easy victory

John Randle ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns Thursday to lead Southern Illinois to a 59-14 win over Quincy in Carbondale.

Southern Illinois (1-0, Gateway) rolled up 480 yards of total offense, with 278 coming on the ground and 202 in the air.

Salukis quarterback Nick Hill completed 13 of 18 passes for 174 yards and 1 touchdowns. Hill's top target was Alan Turner, who had 4 receptions for 59 yards and a touchdown. Jabril Lewis also caught a 12-yard pass in the in the first quarter.

Randle averaged 7.3 yards a carry on 18 touches.

Louisville 73, Murray St. 10: Brian Brohm threw for 375 yards and 4 touchdowns and the 10th-ranked Cardinals sparkled in coach Steve Kragthorpe's debut, drilling overmatched Murray State in Louisville, Ky.

Brohm led Louisville (1-0) to touchdowns on each of the Cardinals' first eight drives, guiding an attack that looked awfully similar to the wide-open system that former coach Bobby Petrino used to lead the Cardinals to national prominence.

Louisville rolled up 655 yards of total offense, and worked with a stunning efficiency. The Cardinals averaged a touchdown once every four plays in the first half, and their longest scoring drive with the starters in took all of 2:58.

Harry Douglas caught five passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns.

Rutgers 38, Buffalo 3: Ray Rice rushed for 184 yards and 3 touchdowns, Tiquan Underwood had 10 catches for a school-record 248 yards and Mike Teel passed for a career-best 328 yards as the 16th-ranked Scarlet Knights, coming off an 11-2 season, opened their most anticipated season in front of 43,091 at home.
