U.S. cannot afford to export jobs

Sara Bryant nailed it with her Aug. 4 letter to the editor. I'm sure she had more to say, but did not want to exceed the allowed number of words.

For example, every job we export for whatever reason, is one less contributor to the Social Security fund. This at a time when we are being told that the fund will run out of money in the near future. In the meanwhile, we are being told that we need to allow illegal immigrants to come here and remain here in order to perform jobs that Americans will not do.

Whatever happened to "common sense"?

As Ms. Bryant so eloquently expressed it, a lot of this stuff is dangerous, or at the very least risky to use. I for one will rather buy a used American power tool from the '50s and rebuild it than try to use a Chinese product of unknown quality.

There is another group of reasons for not buying Chinese goods, and that reason is financial. The Chinese are buying American securities with the money we send them. That is the money left over after they build up their military machine with our money!

Incidentally, the problem with the wheat gluten could just as easily been a human problem. Wheat gluten is widely used in products for human consumption.

It's sad that we have been reduced to the status of a service economy when there was a time when "Made in America" really meant something.
